Nuclear Decommissioning Operative

Typical job description:

The role of the Nuclear Decommissioning Operative is to control and operate basic decommissioning plant and equipment efficiently and safely. They will report and investigate deviations from routine operating conditions and be able to deal with basic process problems. They are given the opportunity to progress to Nuclear Decommissioning Team Leader.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Prepare work area for decommissioning activities
  • Operate, maintain, monitor and adjust nuclear decommissioning equipment
  • Dismantle contaminated plant, structures and equipment
  • Decontaminate radioactive plant and materials
  • Remove and transfer hazardous materials to designated storage areas

Entry Level:

4 GCSE grades A-C (Including English and Maths) or standard grades

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £12,000 to £30,000 per year depending on acquired skills, disciplines and working schedules.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. Engineers and assistants often work shifts and overtime for which an extra payment is made. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.

Industry Standard:

Some operatives may complete an Apprenticeship (or Foundation Modern Apprenticeship) in Specialized Process Operations (Nuclear Options)
Level 2 Diploma in Nuclear Decommissioning (NVQ)(QCF)
Basic Common Induction Training Standard
Working Safely Training Standard
Basic Nuclear Industry Context Training Standard
Basic Nuclear Industry Behaviours Training Standard

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • The practice involved in carrying out routine decommissioning activities within the nuclear industry
  • The practice involved with the minimisation, packaging and removal of hazardous materials and transfer of materials to designated storage area
  • Technical and Plant knowledge at appropriate level
  • Fundamental principles and implications of radiation hazards
  • Health and Safety legislation
  • Permit to work, Standard Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments
  • Basic skills in communication, numeracy and ICT
