Maintenance Engineer
Typical job description:
The work involves maintenance of production machinery, office equipment and utilities supply throughout the organisation. Maintenance work may be planned, preventative or as a result of an emergency or breakdown.
Maintenance engineers may be specialists in one or a number of maintenance disciplines – electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or electronic.
Key Processes:
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:
- Making regular checks on machinery according to a planned schedule
- Attending and repairing breakdowns on machines and equipment
- Checking and calibrating instruments
- Replacing parts on equipment as part of a routine maintenance plan
- Design and construct special control panels, jigs and fixtures
- Assist with machine and tooling improvements on processing equipment
- Assist with machinery and equipment installations
- Assist with mechanical and electrical improvements to plant and equipment
- Forward planning of resource requirements
Entry Level:
Normally through an Apprenticeship programme having obtained three to five GSCE’s or intermediate GN/GSVQ’s

Pay and conditions:
Salaries commence at £13,000 rising to £30,000 per year depending acquired skills and maintenance disciplines.
Between 35 and 40 hours per week. They often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency equipment breakdowns
Industry Standard:
N/SVQ level 3 Engineering discipline and BTeC ONC/D
Competencies:
- Able to read and interpret engineering and circuit drawings
- Good analytical and problems solving skills
- Writing technical reports
- Able to work well on their own or in a team
- High standard in computer literacy.

- Good communication and written skills
- Technically competent in the manufacturing process to be managed.
