Process Operations Team Leader

Typical job description:

The Nuclear Process Team Leader understands how to perform the tasks required of a Nuclear Process Senior Operator. The Team Leader will allocate personnel to maintain processing and to prepare for and carry out maintenance. They will also assist in developing and monitoring plans and procedures.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Assist in developing plans and procedures
  • Monitor and adapt plans and procedures
  • Respond to and solve operational problems
  • Allocate personnel to prepare for / carry out maintenance
  • Control safety significant events as required of a Duty Authorised Person or Radiation Protection Supervisor

Entry Level:

Advanced apprenticeship (or Modern Apprenticeship in Scotland) or Diploma (QCF) Level 3

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £21,000 to £40,000 per year depending on qualifications and experience.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week.

Supervisors often work shifts and overtime and might be called out on emergency plant breakdowns. Extra payment is made for shift work and overtime. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.

  • A good understanding of the safety, security and behavioural expectations of those working on Nuclear sites
  • The fundamental principles and implications of radiation hazards
  • A good understanding of the procedures for dealing with radioactive discharges, waste, environmental control and emergencies
  • A good understanding of management techniques
  • A good understanding of Continuous Improvement Techniques
  • Good skills in communications, numeracy and ICT
  • Health and Safety legislation and related regulation and risk minimisation practices
  • Planning and scheduling techniques
