Team Leader - Process Development

Typical job description:

To manage the group and ensure that all tasks are carried out in an effective, efficient and compliant manner.

To liaise with other departments and groups to provide a timely service for stakeholders.

Manage the technical support for specific unit operations of production equipment and systems such as reaction vessels, filters, distillation columns and evaporators that are used in bulk manufacture.

Develop and implement process improvements to optimise production processes and minimise operational costs in the plant.

To plan and develop process improvements in the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API).

Manage a team of chemists to provide technical support for specific unit operations of production equipment and systems such as reaction vessels, filters, distillation columns and evaporators that are used in bulk manufacture.

Participate in continuous operational improvement.

To ensure that all health and safety procedures within the department are adhered to with respect to personal duties and the duties of the staff
To manage internal and external audits where required and be present at regulatory or client audits
To liaise with clients on product quality matters
To liaise with other departments and groups to provide a timely service for stakeholders
To identify and implement (following necessary approval) opportunities to improve the performance of the group

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Make sure that laboratory systems and equipment comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements;
  • Take part in Lean Sigma activities within the laboratory;
  • Report and interpret data;
  • Check documents, methods and procedures;
  • Check work of team;
  • Liaise with other colleagues including production and engineering and analytical staff.

Entry Level:

Degree or PhD in a Science subject.

Pay and conditions:

30000GBP to 45000GBP.

They mainly work between the plant, office and laboratory where they need to wear protective clothing such as caps, safety glasses, gloves ,shoes and white coveralls or gowns.

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards; Awareness of local laboratory safe working practices;
  • Continuous quality improvement systems such as Lean manufacture and Six Sigma.
