Downstream Maintenance Apprentice
Typical job description:
As part of an Advanced/ Modern Apprenticeship these skills and competencies will include the routine and non routine maintenance activities on refinery plant and equipment as efficiently and safely as possible to defined quality specification. The apprentice will report to the Maintenance Technician for all the technical information relating to the maintenance of the plant and equipment. In addition, the role will require attendance at college to gain qualifications. These qualifications may include a technical certificate gained in the first eighteen months which would include the following; mechanical, instrument, electrical and process standards.
Key Processes:
The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:
- Rotated through differing process units to gain experience of different plant & equipment to support achievement of S/NVQ/ Diploma Level 3 qualification
Entry Level:
A minimum of 3 GCSEs including English, Maths and a Science subject.

Pay and conditions:
Pay and conditions vary considerably according to demographics and site specific manufacturing processes.
Working hours for apprentices are normally 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday
Industry Standard:
For the first 18 months you may be required to undertake a technical certificate as part of your apprenticeship.
After 18 months and for the next two years the apprentice will follow a specific maintenance apprenticeship route in either mechanical, instrument and / or electrical resulting in a Level 3 S/NVQ in the respective maintenance discipline.
Competencies:
- Have an aptitude for science and technology
- Effective computing, literacy and numeracy skills
- The role of the apprentice maintenance technician is to learn all the skills and competencies associated with the job role of the Maintenance Technician.
Knowledge needed for the role:
- A knowledge and understanding of the maintenance of the key processes, plant and equipment associated with refinery operations at that particular site.
