Manager - Safety and Environment

Typical job description:

The Manager – Safety & Environment maintains systems to monitor and demonstrate (assure) compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements and participates in improvement processes. Compliance comprises a wide range of issues about the performance of people and of plant and systems.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Develop and implement the Plant/Site Assurance programme
  • Monitor the Assurance performance and implement improvements when needed
  • Develop and Maintain Plant Assurance documentation such as Environmental Authorisations, Emergency Response Plans etc
  • On behalf of the Site Director liaise with Regulators, Auditors and Customer representatives,
  • Manage the assurance team and ensure that all key responsibilities with regard to the Company's Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality Standards are met
  • Support Company/Directorate and Divisional Assurance Improvements
  • Manage Regulatory related Company programmes, Periodic Review of Safety, Engineering Substantiation
  • Act as Team Leader for Audits and Annual Reviews of Safety
  • Provide Assurance input to the Plant Modification Control process
  • Safeguard company information and assets from unauthorised access or disclosure
  • Actively participate and contribute towards Continuous Improvement within the business

Entry Level:

- HND/Foundation Degree/Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £30,000 to £45,000 per year depending on experience, qualifications and leadership potential.

Normal working hours are 35 to 40 hours per week. The Manager Quality, Safety & Environment is permanently responsible for the role and may be called in at any time.

The industry has an excellent safety record and culture.

Industry Standard:

- Chartered Engineer or Scientist
- Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner (IOSH)
- Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Current processing technology methods
  • Health & Safety and Environment Legislation and related Codes of Practice
  • NII Licence Conditions, IRR, RSA 1993
  • Understanding of safety approvals processes and safety case methodologies, NII SAP's (safety assessment principles)
  • Quality management systems and Assurance standards
  • Information and Data management systems and ICT how they are used for traceability and quality records
  • Continuous Improvement techniques
  • Project Management and Leadership in the Engineering environment
