Site Manager/Director

Typical job description:

The Site Manager / Director is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all plant and equipment including production, engineering, output, personnel, logistics and other commercial activity including sales and marketing.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • the actions involved in a process start up & shutdown
  • how the process operating systems are controlled and maintained
  • unit operating procedures
  • how to develop and monitor plans and procedures
  • plan and allocate personnel to manufacturing plans
  • organise and create teams to solve operational problems
  • allocate resources to overcome process problems
  • make a capital / capex budget case
  • manage budget
  • raw material costing
  • analyse impact of volume on costs
  • the underpinning science & technology knowledge for the chemical sector & job role
  • how to use maths, SPC & IT
  • relevant API, formulation & packaging technologies

Entry Level:

Degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related subject
Chartered Engineering/Chemist Status

Pay and conditions:

Earnings vary considerably between employers. Average earnings between 35,000GBP and 50,000GBP.

Industry Standard:

Level 5 Diploma in Management

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • An understanding of the plant and equipment involved in the production of chemical products.
  • An understanding and knowledge of all regulatory requirements with regard to the production of chemical products.
  • A knowledge of budgetary requirements including capital project and revenue project procurement procedures.
  • A knowledge of retail and marketing processes.
  • A knowledge and understanding of the impact of failure of key systems and processes including loss of containment and threat to the environment.
