Support Services Worker

Typical job description:

Support Services Workers support engineering and/or science functions in the plant in a variety of ways. They are part of the maintenance or scientific team.

Key Processes:

The exact nature of the work will depend on the size of the employing organisation.
However, it will almost certainly involve:

  • Assisting scientists or engineers in various plant investigation activities
  • Calibrating and operating tools or scientific equipment
  • Calculating and interpreting data (under supervision as necessary)
  • Recording of plant test results and/or analysis reports
  • Maintaining laboratory to the high standards of cleanliness and order required
  • Working in accordance with company Safety, Quality and Security procedures
  • Maintaining hazard data sheet, COSHH and operational procedure document control

Entry Level:

- 4 GCSE grades A-C (including English and Maths)or Standard grades - credit or Level 2 equivalent
- Experience in practical scientific procedures or engineering operations

Pay and conditions:

Salaries are in the range of £12,000 to £20,000 per year depending on acquired skills, qualifications and knowledge.

Between 35 and 40 hours per week. Engineers and Scientists and their assistants often work shifts and overtime. The industry has an excellent safety record and culture

Industry Standard:

- National Certificate in a Science or Engineering discpline
- IOSH Working Safely Certificate
- Level 2 IT (Key Skills, ECDL or equivalent)

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good level of manual dexterity
  • Basic IT skills
  • Classified Person on the national register of Radiation Classified Workers

Knowledge needed for the role:

  • Engineering, Science or Technology measurement
  • Basic Health and Safety working practices
  • Information Communications Technology
